Workshop Facilitation 101
Breaking down what workshop facilitation actually means
So, I was in a meeting with a client yesterday talking about workshops, and they said, "Yeah, we’ve done workshops, but they didn’t really bring any value."
I asked what they did, and turns out, it was just a long Q&A where the facilitators asked questions, and they answered.
Basically, it was an interview, not a workshop.
I’ve seen this play out so many times. People throw the word workshop around without really knowing what it means. And honestly, I don’t blame them : it gets misused all the time, leading to a lot of confusion about what a real workshop actually is.
Even my own colleagues still ask me, "What exactly do you do?" or "Is that really a job?"
So, I decided to write a post that breaks down what workshop facilitation actually is.
If you're subscribed to my newsletter, chances are you already know the deal, but this will help you explain it even more clearly to others.
Please, tell us what is this workshop facilitation ?
Before I explain how facilitation actually works, let’s first focus on the problem it solves: working effectively with other humans, aka collaboration.
How does collaboration typically work ?
In a typical setup, a team works together to achieve a common goal. They often hold meetings to share ideas and make progress. Then, they work on their own before meeting again to discuss what they've done and plan the next steps.
While this approach can work, it is often hard and requires a lot of effort. Working this way presents challenges such as not everyone contributing equally, having ineffective discussions, , the pursuit of consensus, and various biases.
How does it work with a facilitator ?
With a facilitator, the team has someone to guide them towards achieving their goal. This person uses facilitative skills, such as active listening and managing energy, along with a tool called the workshop.
A workshop is a set of activities designed to help participants reach their goal. So, there are two main components to the success of a facilitated session:
The facilitation techniques the facilitator uses
The workshop : the set of activities they've put together to achieve the team's goals.
Let me share a couple of definitions to clarify things further !
Here’s an analogy to help you really get it. I promise I’ll be quick
For me, the facilitator is like a wizard. They can’t perform magic without a wand. The facilitation techniques are the spells, and the workshop is the wand.
To be a great facilitator, you need to master both aspects: the facilitation techniques and the art of crafting the right workshop.
So next time that you hear someone using the word workshop because they are preparing a long meeting, you explain them what is really a workshop.
Remember
❌ A workshop is not a long meeting
❌ A workshop is not a presentation
❌ A workshop is not a training
❌ A workshop is not a seminar or conference
❌ A workshop is not a Pokemon
Here’s a quick tip to tell if it’s really a workshop: There’s "work" in workshop! So, if you’re ever unsure, just ask yourself, “Am I actually working right now?” 😂
One last thing
Just a quick update: I’ll be hosting the next edition of the Facilitator’s Corner in October, and I’ve received quite a few questions about the bootcamp practicalities
What is the bootcamp about ?
It’s a 6-week program that will empower you to confidently design and run workshops for any team or challenge. You’ll develop essential skills, learn how to create memorable experiences, and gain practical tools to design workshops easily and effectively market them.
I’ve spent the last 4 years facilitating workshops, collaborating with large companies, NGOs, and startups on a wide range of topics. Throughout this journey, I’ve learned from top experts through my podcast and invested over €20k in facilitation training. I’ve taught hundreds of people, combining best practices with my own unique methods.
This experience led me to create the program I wish I had when I first started. I’ve gathered everything you need to master facilitation into one comprehensive program. You won’t need to take another training or search through countless resources. This program is designed to provide you with everything you need to build a successful facilitation career or make a significant impact in your current role using facilitation techniques.
When is it taking place ?
The bootcamp will take place every Monday, with each session lasting 3 hours. We understand it’s a significant time commitment, so we’ll provide high-quality recordings for anyone who can’t join live.
That said, I highly recommend not missing two modules: Module 3 (Workshop Design) on October 28th and the final Practice Session on November 18th. These sessions are essential for getting the most out of the bootcamp!
How much does it cost ?
I'm planning to run a limited number of trainings each year, and since this bootcamp is still in development, the price of the second edition remains accessible. (The next edition should be the normal price)
